2 Left Feet - What is Salsa?

Why salsa?

Salsa is a partner dance comprising a basic step with turns and spins. The word literally means 'sauce' or 'juice' (originally an appreciative shout for a particularly flashy solo) and is a generic term for the fiery fusion of Cuban rhythms and American Jazz.

Many different dance styles have emerged as the music has spread across America, from Colombian and Puerto Rican to Miami Style.

There are 3 main styles of Salsa danced in the UK today: LA Style, Mambo (a.k.a. New York Style) and Cuban. We teach LA style.

LA and Mambo Style involve the follower (generally the female) traveling in a straight line while the leader steps out of the way. The difference between the two is in which beat of the bar is emphasized. LA Style is also referred to as 'On 1' because the dance emphasizes the 1st beat in the bar. Mambo is also referred to as 'On 2' because the dance emphasises the 2nd beat in the bar. These styles generally look quite dynamic and funky.

Cuban style involves the follower and the leader going in circles around one another. This style looks most like what salsa is generally imagined to be. It is danced in a more sensual and traditional way than LA or mambo style but looks less funky
